These rations were based on those used on expeditions with the British Schools Exploration Society in 1990 and 1991, and The Exonian Vatnajokull Expedition in 1992. We did however add a bit to them to make it all rather more fun!
The food was transported out to our base camp mainly in the large boxes as packaged by the manufactures. This meant that most of the packing was done in the field. All of the rice, mash, muesli etc that had to be weighed out was done before leaving England. This was packed in wooden tea chests and removal boxes and NONE SPLIT! During the Science Phase, food was taken as it was needed and stored under Vango Force Ten fly sheets. It was sorted into day bags for the Adventure Phase. We used thick dustbin liners but they weren't really strong enough. The food that was pulled in sleds for a long way got quite badly crushed and wet sometimes. Biscuits were always carried in a rucksack.
Favourite things were: mackerel, bolognaise (with lots of garlic), mash with loads of Gold, mayonnaise, and Birds Chocolate Crunch.
